Warwickshire Scout Lodge No. 9648

Prepared in 2000 by :-

W.Bro.Oliver.A.Franklin, P.Prov.G.Swd.B.

W.Bro.Geoffrey Belfield, P.Prov.G.Swd.B.

W.Bro.Paul Eastbury, P.Prov.J.G.D.

The badge is shield shaped, apropos of the shield of Saint George, the patron saint of scouting.

It has as its centre the fleur-de-lys, in copy of the scout emblem. The stars of the scout emblem are not reproduced as these are copyright protected by the Scout Association. These are replaced on the sinister and dexter leaves by the Masonic square and compass.

The base of the design has a camp fire. The flames and log fire appeared on the neckerchief of the 1st Sandwell group, which was quite a rare occurrence, as normally motifs are not allowed on neckerchiefs. They are symbolic of the outdoor life of scouting, comprising three burning logs in the lower section, three flames above, and above again three smoke trails, rising upwards indicating the three parts of the scout promise and the three parts of the scout movement, and as the smoke ascends, so do our aspirations, (so that our words and actions may ascend to the Grand Lodge above , where the world’s Great Architect lives and reigns forever.)

In the centre leaf is the Warwickshire logo, the Bear and Ragged Staff. Above the design is the wording, 'WARWICKSHIRE ' and below, ‘SCOUT LODGE’ and the Lodge number 9648, proudly proclaiming who we are.

The whole is surrounded by a golden rope, again a scouting indicator embracing the Scout and Masonic symbols, duly secured by a reef knot.

The scout world badge is a fleur-de-lys on a purple field, encircled by a white rope tied with a reef knot.

The colours of purple and gold are both scout and Masonic colours, thus, hanging from the pole, either side of the banner, are two cords in purple and white which would usually be seen hanging from the top of flags carried by each scout group.

On the ends of the wooden pole supporting the banner are two plated brass emblems of the Scout Association. These are copies of those on the wand of the Assistant Director of Ceremonies used by the Lodge, which originally were used on the flags of the 1st Sandwell Scout Group.

(W.Bros Franklin and Belfield were both Group Scout Leaders of this group.)

The badge as presented on the Banner, is an amalgam of ideas and suggestions from members of the lodge, the original basic idea being that of W.Bro. Paul Eastbury.

A lodge banner fund was started during the first year after the consecration. A very generous Brother, a senior member of the lodge and also a Founding Brother, presented the Lodge with a gift of money enabling us to purchase it this year, outright, we are extremely grateful to the late W.Bro. Frank Walton, PAGDC, P.Prov.S.G.W. for his kindness and generosity.

Who hath smelt wood smoke at twilight,

Who hath heard the birch logs burning,

Who is quick to read the noises of the night,

Let him follow with the others,

For the young men's feet are turning

To the camps of proven desire and known delight.

Kipling 1897.
